Collection: We Educate, We Organize, We Lead: HBCUs & the Divine Nine

Welcome to “We Educate, We Organize, We Lead”, a powerful tribute to the sacred grounds of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and the divine spirit of the Divine Nine (D9) Black Greek-letter organizations. Born out of the ashes of slavery and segregation, HBCUs were built by the hands of formerly enslaved people and their descendants who believed education was our weapon against oppression. Institutions like Howard, Spelman, Tuskegee, Hampton, and Fisk became more than just schools; they became fortresses of Black intellect, pride, and resistance. These campuses molded our teachers, preachers, scientists, artists, and revolutionaries; a testament that despite America’s refusal to educate us equally, we educated ourselves extraordinarily.

Within those halls rose the Divine Nine; a family of Black fraternities and sororities who brought structure, service, and leadership to our struggle. Organizations like Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Omega Psi Phi, Delta Sigma Theta, and the rest of our mighty D9 didn’t just stroll on the yard, they marched in protests, led voter drives, mentored youth, and carried the vision of Pan-African unity and Black excellence. Whether it was the Civil Rights Movement or the election of Black political leaders, D9 members stood at the forefront, polished, prepared, and proud. This exhibit shines a light on the cultural rhythm, spiritual depth, and social impact of HBCUs and the D9 not just as traditions, but as powerful institutions that continue to shape the heart, soul, and future of Black America. This is more than legacy, it’s a living movement.
