Collection: Power to the People: The Rise of Black Political and Cultural Power

Welcome to “Power to the People” an unapologetic tribute to the warriors of our community who stood, spoke, and sacrificed so that Black voices could never again be silenced. In this exhibit, we trace the rising tide of Black political and cultural power, from the righteous pen of Ida B. Wells, who risked her life to expose the horror of lynching, to the founding of the NAACP, which became a powerful legal and organizing force in the early 20th century. We honor the spirit of the Civil Rights Movement, where young people, elders, and freedom fighters marched, sat in, and spoke truth to power with unwavering dignity. These were not just protests, they were strategic revolutions of the heart and mind.

But our story didn’t stop at peaceful protest. As the cries for justice were met with violence and delay, we rose with fire and fearlessness. This space honors the strength of the Nation of Islam, which instilled pride, discipline, and Black self-determination in the face of America’s hate. We uplift the Black Panther Party, who fed our children, protected our communities, and demanded liberation with bold action and brilliant minds. This is the legacy of power rooted in love for our people; political, spiritual, cultural, and radical. And it was all for one reason: so that Black people could define our future on our own terms. The fists were raised not in anger alone, but in truth, pride, and power. This is your story. Walk tall in it.
